The 1984 Mercedes 300D w123 Limousine offered a unique combination of luxury, exclusivity, economy and reliability that could not possibly be matched by any other brand making it the vehicle of choice by countless diplomats, executives and other such entities.

These luxurious Mercedes 300D Long Wheelbase cars still command a strong demand internationally for its high degree of ride comfort and great spaciousness and predictably.

Classic 300D Limos join the exclusive vehicle fleet of diplomatic embassies and the era’s top celebrities and social elite. W123 production ended in January, 1986 with 63 final T-models rolling out. Most popular single models were the 240D (455,000 built), the 230E (442,000 built), and the 200D (378,000 built).

Mercedes-Benz is celebrating an important anniversary for the W123 family of cars — the ones known here in the states by names like 240D, 280E and 300TD. The Mercedes-Benz W123 is a now legendary series of flagship executive vehicles manufactured by Mercedes-Benz from 1975 until 1985 and was a successor to the earlier W114 and W115 series.

From 1977, limited number of Long Wheel Base versions (3,425mm or 134.8″) were produced by Mercedes-Benz with a 3.0L straight 5 cylinder (OM617.912) Diesel engine and these stretched sedans would comfortably seat 8 people and could be ordered as either a 240D, 50 or 300D model.

The W123 series ended production in January 1986 with over 324,718 W123 series cars being built but with only 4,679 LWB Limousines!

These diesel models are considered to have one of the most reliable engines ever produced and one of the key reasons for Mercedes popularity around the world today as the ultimate long distance and durable touring car with many models still being used around the globe as taxi cabs boasting many hundreds of thousands of miles on the clock.

Mercedes-Benz introduced the W123 four-door versions in January, 1976.

While there were some technical similarities to their predecessors, the new models were larger in wheelbase and exterior dimensions.

The styling was also updated, although stylistic links with the W114 / W115 were maintained. Initially, all models except 280/280E featured quad unequal-size round headlights and the latter large rectangular units.

When facelifted these units became standard across the range. All W115 engines were carried over, with the 3 litre 5-cylinder diesel model being renamed from “240D 3.0” to “300D” (as it had already been called before in North American markets).

The first Mercedes turbo diesel production W123 appeared in September, 1979. This was the 300 TD Turbodiesel, available with automatic transmission only.

In most markets, the turbocharged 5-cylinder 3-litre diesel engine (Type OM617) was offered only in the T body style,

while in North America it was also available in saloon and coupé guises.

As usual, model names were related to engine sizes, type of engine and chassis type:

  • C for Coupé
  • T for Tourismus und Transport (estate/station wagon)
The long-wheelbase model was simply called “Lang” (long)
  • D for Diesel
  • Turbo for Turbodiesel
  • E for Einspritzung (fuel injection)

As for the chassis codes, W123 is the regular sedan, S123 the estate, C123 the coupé, V123 the Lang, and F123 for the bare chassis as used for ambulances and other conversions.

June 1980 saw the introduction of new four-cylinder petrol engines (Type M102).

A new 2-litre four with shorter stroke replaced the old M115, a fuel-injected 2.3-litre version of this engine (in 230E/TE/CE) the old carbureted 230.

Both engines were more powerful than their predecessors. In 1980/81, the carbureted 280 versions went out of production; the fuel-injected 280E continued to be offered.

From August 1976, long-wheelbase versions (3,425 mm (134.8 in)) were produced. In 1980/81 the carbureted 280 versions went out of production; the fuel-injected 280E continued to be offered.

These were available as 7/8 seater saloons with works bodies or as a chassis with complete front body clip, the latter serving as the base for ambulance and hearse bodies by external suppliers like Binz or Miesen.

These “Lang” versions could be ordered as 240D, 300D and 250 models.

At the Frankfurt Auto Show in September, 1977 the W123T estate was introduced; the T in the model designation stood for “Touring and Transport”.

All engines derivative except “200TD” were available in the range. T production began in March, 1978 in Mercedes’ Bremen factory.

The only new engine was the 250’s 2,525 cc inline-six (Type M123, a short-stroke version of the 2.8 litre six Type M110) that replaced the old 2,496 cc Type M114 “six”.

Diesel W123s never die, as the saying goes. They just go into hibernation until the next gas crisis. In September 1982 all models received a mild facelift.

The rectangular headlights, previously fitted only to the 280/280E, were standardized across the board, as was power steering.

The naturally aspirated 300TD wagon only had a brief career in North America, being replaced by a turbocharged model for the 1981 model year.

Most American buyers had found the heavy wagon much too slow with the less powerful engine.

The turbodiesel engine also appeared in the sedan and coupé models in America, but only a few months behind the wagon.

Manual transmissions were generally only available to North American buyers in the four-cylinder models, and a five-speed was never available. From 1982 until the W123’s replacement in late 1985, only diesels were sold in North America.

Since February 1982 an optional five-speed manual transmission was available in all models (except the automatic-only 300 turbodiesel).

It was 40 years ago last week that the new sedan premiered before the media at the Paul Ricard Circuit in France, kicking off a successful ten-year production run that would see more than 2.7 million examples roll out of the factories.

When facelifted, these units became standard across the range. All W115 engines were carried over, with the 3-litre 5-cylinder diesel model being renamed from “240D 3.0” to “300D” (as it had already been called before in North American markets).

The only new engine was the 250’s 2,525 cc inline-six (Type M123, a short-stroke version of the 2.8-litre six Type M110) that replaced the old 2,496 cc Type M114 “six”.

At the Frankfurt Auto Show in September, 1977 the W123T estate was introduced; the T in the model designation stood for “Touring and Transport”.

All engines derivative except “200TD” were available in the range. T production began in March, 1978 in Mercedes’ Bremen factory.

Under the hood is Mercedes stout and durable inline 5-cylinder diesel engine. Its ability to deliver near-gasoline-engine-like acceleration was a combined result of its seamless torque delivery, and smooth-shifting 4 speed automatic gearbox; which gave the 300Ds the ability to easily reach highway speeds without the typical diesel drama that lesser diesels were known for (you know – the wait, wait, wait, ahh, now were moving! experience).

Merging onto freeway on-ramps was no longer something that one had to plan well in advance for, to avoid being rear-ended by cars already moving at speed.

In addition to being well known and popular for their looks, these cars were touted for reliability and durability, with many of them reaching the vaunted Million Mile club; and, like this example, are still on the road today

Customers willing to order new cars from their local authorized dealer for the recommended list price faced waiting times in excess of twelve months. Meanwhile, models that were barely used and were available almost immediately commanded a premium over the new price of around DM 5,000.

The W123 line was continuously and relentlessly developed and improved and refined throughout its production cycle and by 1985 the series was near perfection and marked perhaps the ultimate expression of Mercedes long renowned and well deserved reputation for build quality, urability and longevity. From August 1977, long-wheelbase versions (3,425 mm (134.8 in)) were produced.

The Mercedes W123 is a range of executive cars produced by German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz between 1976 and 1985. The W123 models surpassed their predecessor, the Mercedes-Benz W114 models,

as the most successful Mercedes, selling 2.7 million cars before replacement by the Mercedes-Benz W124 after 1985. The additional range of smaller Mercedes-Benz W201 models were introduced in 1982.

Only the 250, 40 D and 300 D models were offered with the long wheelbase.

It was the first factory-built Mercedes-Benz estate, previous estates had been custom-built by external coachbuilders, such as Binz. In early 1979, the diesel models’ power output was increased; power rose from 55 PS (40 kW; 54 hp) to 60 PS (44 kW; 59 hp) in the 200D, from 65 PS (48 kW; 64 hp) to 72 PS (53 kW; 71 hp) in the 240D and from 80 PS (59 kW; 79 hp) to 88 PS (65 kW; 87 hp) in the 300D; at the same time, the 220D went out of production.

W123 introduced innovations including ABS (optional from August, 1980), a retractable steering column and an airbag for the driver (optional from 1982). Power (vacuum servo) assisted disc brakes were standard on all W123s.

Available options included MB-Tex (Mercedes-Benz Texturized Punctured Vinyl) upholstery or velour or leather upholstery, interior wood trim, passenger side exterior mirror (standard on T models), 5-speed manual transmission (European market only) 4-speed automatic transmission (standard in turbodiesel models), power windows with rear-seat switch cut-outs, vacuum powered central locking, rear-facing extra seats (station wagon only), Standheizung (prestart timer-controlled engine heating), self-locking differential, sun roof, air conditioning, climate control, “Alpine” horn (selectable quieter horn), headlamp wipers (European market only), Tempomat (cruise control), power steering (standard after 1982/08), seat heating, catalytic converter (available from 1984 for California only, from fall (autumn) 1984 also in Germany for the 230E of which one thousand were built).

These were available as 7/8 seater saloons with works bodies or as a chassis with complete front body clip, the latter serving as the base for ambulance and hearse bodies by external suppliers like Binz or Miesen.

These “Lang” versions could be ordered as 240D, 300D and 250 models. Mercedes-Benz introduced the W123 four-door versions on 29 January 1976.

In September 1982, all models received a mild facelift. The rectangular headlights, previously fitted only to the 280/280E, were standardized across the board, as was power steering. Since February 1982, an optional five-speed manual transmission was available in all models (except the automatic-only 300 turbodiesel).

W123 production ended in January, 1986 with 63 final T-models rolling out. Most popular single models were the 240D (455,000 built), the 230E (442,000 built), and the 200D (378,000 built).

The W123 introduced innovations including ABS (optional from August, 1980), a retractable steering column and an airbag for the driver (optional from 1982). Power (vacuum servo) assisted disc brakes were standard on all W123s.

In August 1977 Mercedes-Benz introduced the long-wheelbase version of the intermediate class saloon: the wheelbase of the W123 (3.43 metres) was 63 centimetres longer than that of the saloon (2.80 metres).

That provided enough space for a third seat bench and made the car a comfortable executive company car or hotel limousine for seven/eight passengers.

W123s are still with us as a readily-seen population of daily drivers on both coasts and everywhere in between, which is the most powerful reminder of their legacy It is a tribute to the car’s instant popularity –

and possibly to the caution built into the production schedules – that nine months after its introduction,

a black market had developed in Germany for Mercedes-Benz W123s available for immediate delivery.

This led to the introduction of a few diesel models only sold in the United States It is a tribute to the car’s instant popularity – and possibly to the caution built into the production schedules – that nine months after its introduction, a black market had developed in Germany for Mercedes-Benz W123s available for immediate delivery.

Customers willing to order new cars from their local authorized dealer for the recommended list price faced waiting times in excess of twelve months.

Meanwhile, models that were barely used and were available almost immediately commanded a premium over the new price of around DM 5,000.

In the U.S., the W123 wore a slightly different fascia than in Europe and other markets in addition to much more prominent bumpers, courtesy of federal regulations.

Still, the visual changes were on the mild side compared to some models — the Peugeot 604, for instance — and they didn’t do much damage to the looks of the sedan.

The exterior design of the W123 may have been quiet and unassuming, representing a gradual evolution of the well-regarded W114/W115 family of smallish sedans

that preceded it combined with styling cues of the larger W116 sedan.

But it paved the way for the E-Class as we know it today in addition to proving to be one of the most indestructible cars out there, just like its boxy neighbor from Gothenburg that celebrated its 40th birthday a couple of years ago.

In the spring of 1976, a coupé version was introduced on a shorter wheelbase than the saloon (2,710 mm (106.7 in) versus 2,795 mm (110.0 in)) for the saloon).

This W123C/CE was available as a 230C (later 230CE) and as a 280C/CE in most markets; in North America there were additional 300CD versions with naturally aspirated, later turbocharged 3 litre diesel engines.

Enthusiasm for the 123 series increased further in 1977 as this was the year in which Mercedes-Benz presented three additional body variants: the coupe, he long-wheelbase saloon, nd for the first time in the brand’s history a factory-built estate wagon.

The American-market models have even been exported back to Europe by enthusiasts, as well as to various other countries that had no distribution network.

June 1980 saw the introduction of new four-cylinder petrol engines (Type M102). A new 2 litre four with shorter stroke replaced the old M115, a fuel-injected 2.3 litre version of this engine (in 230E/TE/CE) the old carbureted 230. Both engines were more powerful than their predecessors.

Production of the W123 ceased in January of 1986, with the W124 E-Class taking over for the model. The W124 would go on to become a legend in its own right, but it never really displaced its predecessor entirely.

The W123 remains not only one of the most widely produced cars from Stuttgart but also one of the most important, even though hardly anyone is surprised by their continued presence on the roads in 2016.

In early 1979, the diesel models power output was increased; power rose from 55 PS (40 kW; 54 hp) to 60 PS (44 kW; 59 hp) in the 200D, from 65 PS (48 kW; 64 hp) to 72 PS (53 kW; 71 hp) in the 240D and from 80 PS (59 kW; 79 hp) to 88 PS (65 kW; 87 hp) in the 300D; at the same time, the 220D went out of production.

The W123 also brought with it a new-for-Benz station wagon bodystyle, a fact that remains underappreciated to this day because of the ubiquity of Mercedes wagons.

At the time the mere offering of an estate was a major step for the automaker, one that would also force various coachbuilders that offered station wagon conversions to reexamine their business models.

Mercedes offered the W123 in coupe form as well, with a shorter wheelbase. The coupe actually arrived before the wagons did in 1978, with their assembly taking place at the Bremen factory.

Available options included MB-Tex (Mercedes-Benz Texturized Punctured Vinyl) upholstery or velour or leather upholstery, interior wood trim, passenger side exterior mirror (standard on T models), 5-speed manual transmission (European market only),

4-speed automatic transmission (standard in turbodiesel models), power windows with rear-seat switch cut-outs, vacuum powered central locking, rear-facing extra seats (station wagon only),

Standheizung (prestart timer-controlled engine heating), self-locking differential, sun roof, air conditioning, climate control,

“Alpine” horn (selectable quieter horn), headlamp wipers (European market only), Tempomat (cruise control),

power steering (standard after 1982/08), seat heating, catalytic converter (available from 1984 for California only, from fall (autumn)

1984 also in Germany for the 230E of which one thousand were built).

When it debuted in 1976 the W123 offered plenty of new features in addition to Stuttgart’s durable brand of luxury, some of them trickling down from the large W116 sedan that would go on to become the S-Class.

The W123 featured a double-wishbone front suspension, crumple zones, a collapsible steering column, ABS brakes, a range of economical new engines, and even airbags starting in the 1982 model year.

Despite its imposing proportions and powerful engines, he Long-Wheelbase saloon was not mainly intended as a solely representational vehicle, ather,

his rare Long Wheel Base body variant was intended to serve as a sophisticated touring car for several passengers for a variety of upscale purposes

When it first debuted, the sedan borrowed engines from its W114/W115 predecessors, but it also added a 2.5-liter six-cylinder M123 engine producing 129 hp.

In 1978 the powerplant lineup was joined by an engine that became almost synonymous with this midsize sedan: the five-cylinder 300D Turbodiesel.

There was also an extra-long-wheelbase sedan with redesigned rear doors and passenger compartment that served as a limousine, primarily favored by embassies and luxury hotels.

This version was much more popular overseas, and was positioned as an alternative to the W116 and W126 S-Class models.

The first Mercedes turbo diesel production W123 appeared in September, 1979. This was the 300 TD Turbodiesel, available with automatic transmission only. In most markets, the turbocharged 5-cylinder 3 litre diesel engine (Type OM617) was offered only in the T body style, while in North America it was also available in saloon and coupé guises. In the spring of 1976, a coupé version was introduced on a shorter wheelbase than the saloon (2,710 mm (106.7 in) versus 2,795 mm (110.0 in)) for the saloon).

In North America, buyers favored diesel engines for upmarket cars, while CAFE legislation meant that Mercedes-Benz North America had to lower their corporate average fuel economy.

Evolución y cambios año a año:

-Las berlinas de cuatro puertas y 5 plazas;

The MERCEDES-BENZ 300 D runs through 1976 to 1985 (model year).

It’s the top level diesel engine of the W123 family and comes with a OM.617.D30 3005 cm³ L5 engine with a manual or automatic gearbox.

It comes with a M.123.V25 2525 cm³ L6 engine.

The MERCEDES-BENZ 240 D comes with a OM.616.D24 2399 cm³ L4 engine.

The MERCEDES-BENZ 300 D comes with a OM.617.D30 3005 cm³ L5 engine. Both manual and automatic gearbox are available for 250, 240 D and 300 D.

The engines 200, 230, 230 E, 280, 280 E, 200 D, 220 D and 300 D TURBO aren’t available for the V123.

The V123 is equipped with 15″ tires of larger diameter unlike the rest of the W123 Family (14″) in order to raise the ground clearance and avoid being stuck on speed bumps.

1984 Mercedes-Benz 300D W123D 3. 0L 5 cylinder 4 Door Long Wheel Base Limousine Sedan with Diesel fuel injection

The Mercedes-Benz W123 is a now legendary series of flagship executive vehicles manufactured by Mercedes-Benz from 1975 until 1985 and was a successor to the earlier W114 and W115 series.

From 1977. a limited number of Long Wheel Base versions (3. 25mm or 134. 8″) were produced by Mercedes-Benz with a 3. 0L straight 5 cylinder (OM617. 912)

Diesel engine and these stretched sedans would comfortably seat 8 people and could be ordered as either a 240D. 250 or 300D model.

The W123 series ended production in January 1986 with over 324. 18 W123 series cars being built but with only 4. 79 LWB Limousines!

These diesel models are considered to have one of the most reliable engines ever produced and one of the key reasons for Mercedes popularity around the world today

as the ultimate long distance and durable touring car

with many models still being used around the globe as taxi cabs boasting many hundreds of thousands of miles on the clock.

They offered a unique combination of luxury. exclusivity. economy and reliability that could not possibly be matched by any other brand making it the vehicle of choice by countless diplomats.

executives and other such entities.

These luxurious cars still command a strong demand internationally. especially low mileage and well maintained and unabused examples such as this particular example.

Enthusiasm for the 123 series increased further in 1977 as this was the year in which Mercedes-Benz presented three additional body variants: the coupé.

the long-wheelbase saloon. and for the first time in the brand’s history a factory-built estate wagon.

In August 1977 Mercedes-Benz introduced the long-wheelbase version of the intermediate class saloon: the wheelbase of the W123 (3. 43 metres) was 63 centimetres longer than that of the saloon (2. 80 metres).

That provided enough space for a third seat bench and made the car a comfortable executive company car or hotel limousine for seven/eight passengers.

Only the 250. 240 D and 300 D models were offered with the long wheelbase.

The W123 line was continuously and relentlessly developed and improved and refined throughout its production cycle and by 1985 the series was near perfection and marked perhaps the ultimate expression of Mercedes long renowned and well deserved reputation for build quality. durability and longevity.

Despite its imposing proportions and powerful engines. the Long-Wheelbase saloon was not mainly intended as a solely representational vehicle. rather. this rare Long Wheel Base body variant was intended to serve as a sophisticated touring car

for several passengers for a variety of upscale purposes and once again impressed the industry with its high degree of ride comfort and great spaciousness and predictably many of these exclusive vehicles joined the fleets of diplomatic embassies and the era’s top celebrities and social elite.

ithout a doubt. this is one of the finest cars ever built by Mercedes-Benz. or for that matter any other car manufacturer. and they are now becoming increasingly more desirable and hard to find.

Mercedes-Benz was the first company to offer a diesel-powered passenger car with the four-cylinder 260D model in 1935.

Popular as taxis, these 45-horsepower cars had a top speed of between 55 and 60 mph and would return better than 20 miles per gallon of diesel fuel. During the 1950s, Mercedes-Benz introduced diesel engines in the 180D and 190D models, establishing a loyal following of oil-burner fans.

The oil embargo and gasoline crisis of the early 1970s gave diesels a tremendous boost and Mercedes-Benz rode the wave with several diesel models.

These included the W123 chassis 240D sedan, 300D sedans and 300TD wagons,

the 300TD and 300TDT turbodiesel sedans

and wagons, an S-Class based 300SD turbodiesel, and even a 300CD luxury coupe based on the 280CE gasoline engine car.

Diesels became so popular that in 1982 79% of Mercedes-Benz cars sold in North America were diesels.

Figure a non-turbocharged 300D sedan is going to take 21 seconds or more to reach 60 mph and have a top speed of around 90 mph.

Yes, 21 seconds. As in twice as long as what a slow car today might take.

The turbocharged version could cut that time to just 14 seconds with a top speed of over 100 mph, but that’s still not going to keep up with modern traffic.

Even the 300SD, with its 148-hp turbo motor could only reach 60 mph in 13 seconds, although a top speed of 120 mph was attainable.

So, streaking from traffic lights was not in the realm of possibility for these big and heavy sedans.

What they did do well, however, was cruise down the highway.

Delivering upwards of 30 miles per gallon and coddling their occupants with real wood, leather (or the excellent MBTex upholstery),

and tasteful chrome accents, the big sedans from Mercedes-Benz were a nice way to travel.

Besides, looking over that long hood and through the three-pointed star on the grille is worth at least several seconds worth of acceleration on the automotive karma scale.

The top of the spectrum for the diesel cars from the ’70s and early ’80s has got to be the S-Class-based 300SD.

The W126 chassis was used for these cars from 1981 through 1987,

and a long-wheelbase version, the 300SDL, was available in 1986 and ’87.

These were big and complex cars that were highly popular with the owners of long-distance trucking companies, who could fill them up at their company pumps for free.

The complexities of the cars can be their downfall today, since problems with electrical systems (particularly electric rear windows) and the air conditioning system can be very expensive to remedy.

The engines are robust and will easily last many hundreds of thousands of miles.

Much more popular, but also slower, is the 300D, which was based on the W123 chassis.

These cars were made in sedan and wagon form from 1976 through 1981 with normally aspirated engines and from 1982 to 1985 with a turbocharger.

The W123 has legendary reliability and odometer readings of a half-million to over a million miles are not uncommon.

Like their bigger S-Class brothers, the problems aren’t with the engine or basic chassis,

but with the little things like window lift motors (again), air conditioning (again), vacuum lines and power door locks.

The 300D is the car everyone is thinking of when Mercedes reliability is mentioned, as these cars are the primary reason for that reputation.

As with any car that is more than 20 years old, condition is all-important.

The bodies, although way ahead of the competition in their day, are not impervious to corrosion and finding a rust-free example should be the first priority.

The engines, as mentioned, generally aren’t a problem, but the car’s automatic transmission can begin slipping and you had better factor in the cost of a rebuild ($1,000-$1,500) at some point in the future.

Beyond that, the more things that actually work on the car you are looking at the better off you’ll be,

unless you never have a need to open the rear windows or run the air conditioning.

The best part of owning one of these great Teutonic whales is their price. Drivable cars can readily be found in every part of the country for under $1,000.

Really nice cars seem to still be under $2,000 and one of the best 300D sedans around probably still won’t cost more than $3,500.

The S-Class based 300SD generally brings a bit more, but only in terms of a couple of hundred dollars.

Dollars per pound, luxury per unit cost, style per price-whatever your criteria, these have got to be just about the best deals going when it comes to buying a charismatic old car.

And remember these aren’t museum pieces that need to be carefully packed away and driven on weekends.

These are the sorts of cars you throw three friends into on a Friday evening and drive all night to see the sunrise two states away.

Sure, you could do the same trip in a modern sport compact car, but not with the same style (the view through the star), the same panache (near limousine luxury) and the same sense of adventure (breakdowns in 25-year-old cars are always exciting).

You need one of these. I need one of these.

Heck, everybody who loves old European cars needs one of these. They are a part of our heritage as car enthusiasts. And what if they are really, really slow? It just gives us more time to enjoy them.

The W123 Mercedes models – limousine or otherwise – have a reputation for going forever.

The extended wheelbase W123 was a factory job, not an aftermarket cut, spread, and fill, and as such it enjoys the W123’s rep for durability and longevity. Unfortunately, most were built for taxi service

Another deletion on this W123 is apparent under the hood were a turbo is conspicuous by its absence.

Official U.S. 300Ds only came in turbo form, but this one, having made an end run around MB U.S.A., sports the naturally aspirated edition of the OM617 3,005-cc five cylinder which gives the car – get ready for this – 87-bhp.

It does also have 125 lb-ft of torque so while you won’t be getting anywhere fast, you’ll at least be getting there.

For many, the W123 series is the iconic classic Mercedes – and with good reason. This is what you need to know if you want to buy one…

In 1976, when Mercedes launched the new 200-280 series (Code name W123), it seemed much like a case of the emperor’s new suit. Yet again, Mercedes had produced a solid, safe saloon and coupe, much like its previous “Stroke Eight”, but with a wealth of improvements.

Still used to this day as cabs in many developing nations, the W123 has earned itself a reputation as one of the few truly bulletproof classics. Four diesel options were available, along with four petrol options – the top 280 model was also available with fuel injection.

The following year, Mercedes debuted the W123 coupe (or C123, to Mercedes diehard fans). Available as a 230C, 280C, 280CE and 300CD, the British market only received the petrol options.

It’s worth mentioning the Crayford St Tropez, a convertible based on the coupe and built in Britain. Launched in 1978, just 12 were made.

1978 also saw the launch of the W123 estate – or S123. Available with the 2.3, 2.5, 2.8 and 2.4 diesel engines as the 230T, 250T, 280TE and 240TD, the estate proved to be an excellent load-lugger, beloved of the middle classes several years after its replacement. Today it makes an excellent family classic.

In 1979, a limousine derivative was launched – an extra row of seats making the car an eight seater, intended for commercial work rather than prestige use. Many clients operated airport taxi companies or funeral parlours. In the UK most limousines were based on the 250 model, but 240D and 300D limousines were also available.

A facelift in 1980 brought rectangular halogen-beam headlamps to the whole range, previously only seen on coupes and 280Es. Rustproofing was stepped up with wheel arch liners as standard and revised gear ratios improved economy. ABS became optional, the 230C and 230T left production, while the 200T and 300TD were launched.

Revisions in 1982 mean the last W123s are the best of the bunch.

A five speed manual option replaced the original four-speed, along with standard power steering across the range.

The 250T was dropped, and new seats meant better legroom in the back.

In 1985, the new W124 was launched. Styled as a larger 190, and with many components shared with the smaller model,

many argue that the W124 had lost that special something which older Mercedes had.

Whether that view is right or wrong, there is no escaping the fact that the W123 is the archetypal Mercedes to this day, and an excellent classic buy.

2.7 million W123s were produced over a nine year period. 2.37 million were saloons, just under 200,000 were estates and less than 100,000 coupes were produced. The rest were limousines, chassis for ambulances – but these are so rare it’s barely worth counting.

Most sought after on the classic market is the Coupe – far costlier than the saloon when new, it is accordingly more expensive on the classic market.

Restoration costs tend not to be cheap either, making it a classic vital to buy on condition rather than spec.

Collectors’ favourites regardless of body are the 280 models – the four cylinder and diesel models are less collectible, and few like the 250 even as a usable classic.

The 230E is arguably the sensible choice – powerful and economical, reliable, and more affordable than the 280s. Later cars are more desirable; taking advantage of the myriad updates introduced over the years.

W123s left the factory with outstanding paint and – post 1980 – excellent rust protection by the standards of the day. But that is not to say that they’re immune from tinworm.

Spare wheel wells and jacking points are also common failures come MoT time, while if the battery tray is allowed to rust away the rot can get into the bulkhead – expensive costly repairs or curtains for the car.

Estate tailgates rot out, as do fuel tanks – and the latter is NLA, so you’re left to take your chances with secondhand parts or have one made to spec. Bumpers can also corrode – and beware that the 280E shares its rear one with the Coupe and not the other saloons,

so ensure the right one is fitted. Sunroofs can cause issues where the drain tubes rust out – a common cause of damp footwells, while the sunroof tray itself can rot and eventually seize the roof in place. Neither of these jobs is cheap to fix.

Saloon and Coupe models are prone to rusting out underneath the parcel shelf at the rear, which can be seen from outside by rust bubbles around the rear window or the pillar trim finishers on saloons.

Rear window rubbers are often the cause, deteriorating, letting water in, and then deteriorating unseen.

If it’s visible outside then there is certainly work to do, this is a structural area and the shell is compromised unless a repair is carried out to a professional standard. Be very wary of cars with damage or corrosion in this area.

Panels are available – pattern items are rarely as good but Mercedes will still supply original panels.

If you’re on a budget though, pattern parts may be the answer, as original panels are not cheap.

Pattern front wings, for instance, can cost from as little as £50 online.

ENGINE
The M115 and M102 four-cylinder engines are all-but-bombproof when services properly, as are the M123 and M110 six cylinder units fitted to the 250 and 280 models respectively.

The M115 – named because the cam cover was aluminium – was a development of the M121 which could trace its way back to the 190 Ponton models.

Simple yet over engineered in the best Mercedes traditions, it will run forever with regular oil changes.

It’s a non-crossflow unit with the distributor mounted on the other side of the block, and the camshaft and tappet arrangement (fingers) was clearly copied by Ford for the Pinto units – the cam runs in three bearings.

The later M102 is also an iron block SOHC – but crossflow, with a new camshaft and rocker design to enable a hemispheric combustion chamber.

Equally long lived, these can be more difficult to work on in 230 form owing to the extent of the fuel injection system. This in itself is reliable but can hinder access.

The M110 engine was a development of the M130 – first seen in the W115 and W116 models, it was a DOHC development of the older engine with revised bore and stroke, and seen in UK market W123s solely in fuel injected form with Bosch K-Jetronic.

Not known for many faults, the oil pump and head gasket should nonetheless be checked.

Like the four cylinders, this is an engine that will last forever if need be.

The M123-engined 250 was largely redundant following the launch of the 230E. Slower than the 230E and thirstier than the 280E, the engine was a single overhead cam development of the elderly M180.

Fine as a toy, in period it became undesirable owing to its poor characteristics for regular use – but is another engine that will last for as long as it is maintained.

The two four cylinder diesels and the single five-pot diesel seen in 200D, 240D and 300D models respectively are engines that will last to half a million miles with basic maintenance,

and should pose few issues in service.

TRANSMISSION
All Mercedes manual gearboxes are built to last – though they’re not the nicest in the world to use, with notchy and stiff action feeling rather too agricultural for a car of this class.

The automatic 722.1 gearbox is far better – a gearbox of Mercedes design which again poses no concerns in practice.

This gearbox starts in second as a matter of course, but engages first under kickdown or when L is selected.

With four gears, it should behave as a three speed except under load.

Diffs are known to be solid, but keep an eye on the driveshaft seals just to be safe.

SUSPENSION
Chances are that most W123s will need re-bushing now, which can be an expensive and time consuming job. Estates featured self levelling suspension – by Boge Nivomat. When these fail it can be expensive to rectify; Nivomats can be hard to source and are not cheap.

Cars with power steering – most until 1982, all from then on – shouldn’t feel loose, nor should those without.

Make sure there’s no play in the steering – and also that the box isn’t too tight.

Overtightened steering boxes can wear more quickly, and often the original issue was more likely to have been the far cheaper steering damper arm.

Rear trailing arms can rot out, and to repair them means fully dismantling the rear.

As a special tool is needed for rear wheel bearings, this is a specialist job and we wouldn’t advise you to try it at home.

BRAKES
Servo-assisted discs all round mean that by the standards of the 1970s and 1980s the W123 stops really rather well.

It’s a well-engineered system, too, with little really to go wrong.

Calipers can seize – this would give a soft pedal and a lack of real braking effort.

It’s not the end of the world as they can be rebuilt with relative ease. Master cylinders can also fail, but these are not expensive or difficult to replace.

Apart from this it’s simply a case of checking the brake fluid has been renewed every two years or so, to ensure there’s no water or air in the system.

INTERIOR

If you’re looking at a W123, the interior has to be one of the biggest things to check in terms of condition.

There were five different types of interior trim available –

MB Tex, leather, cloth, half cloth and velour.

In addition, there were several colour combinations available,

and finding a good condition interior to match your original is going to be difficult unless you have a relatively common trim.

Velour and half-cloth will be the most difficult to source, especially in some of the Series 1 interior colour schemes as early interiors are especially scarce.

Head linings don’t tend to sag, being trimmed the old fashioned way rather than with material glued to a substrate.

Check the carpets and floorpans for any sign of water ingress;

this is a sign that the front windscreen seal has failed and while it’s a replaceable item, ensuring that your pride and joy is dry afterwards is not going to be an easy job.

Also check the condition of the front seats – both the standard ones and the lowered ones offered as an option in the Coupe.

They’re of a complex sprung design rather than relying on foam for support, but they can collapse – most notably on the outer edge of the driver’s seat base.

These can be costly to repair, and while breakers sometimes have good seats on offer they’re unsurprisingly rare – your best bet is to find a specialist who can rebuild it for you.

Leather can be revived using kits, and both Woolies (01778 347347)

and the Furniture Clinic (0844 879 3691) will be able to offer advice too.

Toys tend to be reliable. Most were fairly Spartan, but electric windows and sunroof are often fitted, as is a single electric mirror, occasionally air conditioning, and often central locking.

Air con can of course leak, and many will still be running R12 rather than R134a; drop in gases are available.

The central locking – and the front seat locks for coupes – is vacuum operated, and any damage to the system can see it fail.

Make sure you check this before you buy the car – as the implications for the front seats in a coupe can make this an MoT failure point.

VERDICT

The W123 Mercedes is one of the simplest executive classics you can buy, and if you take your time and buy well you will be rewarded with many years of enjoyable fault free motoring.

Watch out for trim issues, though, or leaks –

and while most things are within the scope of a DIY buyer it could be worth cultivating a relationship with your local specialist.

Joining a club such as the Mercedes-Benz Club (0345 603 2660) is wise, as it can not only help advise as to specialists but be a valuable source of information for the DIY enthusiasts too.

Many argue that the W123 is the last truly traditional Mercedes and the end of an era, with the quality of its successors suffering –

there is very little that breaks on a well kept 123.

Choose a 230E for comfort, performance and reliability, though there are always those who believe that a Mercedes should have six cylinder.

If this is the case, look no further than the excellent range-topping 280E.

Carburettor cars are slower and thirstier, and it’s rare for anything to go wrong on the Bosch fuel injection system.

If you’re seeking style or an investment, the coupe is undoubtedly the model to choose – whereas an estate makes a more than capable family classic.

I’ve always regarded the W123 as one of the most legendary Mercedes-Benz cars in the world.

Millions of them (3 million if I’m not mistaken) have been sold around the world, and they’ve all been symbols of true German Reliability.

For many, this was a great car for a great time.

It was first launched in 1976, marketed in the US for about 49000 USD today’s money, competing with similar luxury cars such as the Cadillac Seville.

But why was it so popular? Well, during those days,

the American automobile industry had quality control problems and for people to see such a marvel in engineering detail was amazing.

The beautifully sewn MB-Tex, power windows and locks, and real wood trim made it irresistible to future buyers.

And adding to the fact that the world was just recovering from the 1973 gas crisis,

the W123’s 4 and 5 cyl diesels introduced a new generation of buyers to the brand.

Thanks to the extremely economical diesel powerhouses, said generation shaped the future for Mercedes Benz.

Because of them, the W123 (in far more affordable trim) became one of the most best-selling cars in the world,

a car that you can find from one end to the other end of the world,

be it Africa, the Middle East, America, or Europe, up till today.

By the early 80s, Mercedes invested boatloads of money to the W201, another brilliant machine, and the W124,

the W123’s successor and another successful car. But why need a successor when the predecessor was a success?

Well, Mercedes felt the need to update the ever so amazing W123, which was a dinosaur compared to other similar-era automobiles.

But amazingly, the W123 refused to go.

Car fans, wagon dads, and sports car drivers have created a community upon it.

It became a symbol of the late 70s, a miracle car that survived an oil crisis and the remnants of one.

The bulletproof engines, over-engineered chassis, and almost rust-proof body helped this car keep on going,

up till now, making it one of the cheapest classics available for purchase these days.

1. It was an extremely well made car, very sturdy, both classic and technically advanced.

2. It was the cheapest way to drive a Mercedes. A-B-C-class were not invented.

3. Many manufactuerers who are competing with an E-class of today could not do that in 1976.

Audi 100 and BMW 5 series were no Mercedes killers like they are today. Lexus, Acura and Infiniti were not present.

Okay, on the other hand: Back then Citroen, Peugeot, Renault and Fiat had cars in that range.

But today an VW Passat is not worse than a Mercedes. In 1976 it was clearly one class below.

4. In 1976 Mercedes was more or less the only manufacturer of an upperclass car with a Diesel engine.

In Germany this made the W123 the standard car for all farmers (they did not have to pay tax on Diesel fuel) as well as all taxicab drivers.

Today the E-class may have a market share of 40 percent of all taxicabs in Germany. 40 years ago Mercedes had 80 percent.

5. Mercedes offered the car in many versions, also suitable for coachbuilders who made ambulance or funeral cars out of them.

6. Mercedes sold the car to basically every country in the world. Even North Korea bought some.

Fun fact: Every Mercedes W123 has a drivers seat which can be adjusted in the height (this was quite innovative 40 years ago).

Unfortunately the mechanism for this was built into the platform of the car, not entirely into the seat.

The result: Right Hand Driven W123 came with a height adjustable co-pilots seat;-)

Soviel also dazu.

Hinzu kamen diverse Sonderfahrzeuge.

113 Nm / 2400/min stehen gegen 360 Nm/1.600-2.600/min.

2º Puntos a revisar

Piloto trasero Faldon delantero

Evolución y cambios año a año: (Pinchar aquí).

-Las berlinas de cuatro puertas y 5 plazas;

The word limousine is derived from the name of the French region Limousin. A particular type of carriage hood or roof physically resembled the raised hood of the cloak worn by the shepherds there.
An alternate etymology has the chauffeur wearing a Limousin-style cloak in the open driver’s compartment, for protection from the weather.

The name was then extended to this particular type of car with a permanent top projecting over the chauffeur.
Rich owners of expensive carriages and their passengers were accustomed to their own private compartment leaving their coachman or driver outside in all weathers. When automobiles arrived the same people required a similar arrangement for their chauffeurs.

The 1916 definition of limousine by the US Society of Automobile Engineers is “a closed car seating three to five inside, with driver’s seat outside”.

In the US sub-categories of limousines in 1916 were the berline defined as “a limousine having the driver’s seat entirely enclosed”, and the brougham, defined as “a limousine with no roof over the driver’s seat.”

Other variations were the limousine-landaulet with a removable or folding roof section over the rear passenger seat, and the limousine de-ville, with a solid roof over the rear passengers but a removable or folding roof section over the driver’s seat.

The limousine body style has a partition separating the driver from the rear passenger compartment. This partition includes a usually openable glass section so passengers may see the road. An intercom system may be supplied if requested.

Limousines are long-wheelbase vehicles to provide a suitably comfortable passenger compartment. There will usually be occasional or jump seats at the front of the compartment. Some of theses seats are mounted so they can face either way.

Mercedes-Benz have been building long wheel base versions (LWB) of their sedans since 1967 when they first produced the 200D long wheel base sedan in conjunction with the German coach builder Binz. The one featured on these pages is a 1982 250 LWB. It is based on the W123 series of sedans. Other engine options that were available in the W123 LWB series were the 4-cyl 240D and the 5cyl 300D. Here are some specifications:

Build dates 09/77 to 12/85

Build numbers 5180units

Engine 2.5lt 6cyl 140hp/103kw

Transmission 4 speed auto

Wheelbase 3425mm (std sedan is 2795mm)
When it comes to cars engineered to last, few companies have been as consistent as Mercedes-Benz. Back in the 1970s its advertising slogan was ‘Engineered like no other car in the world’ and it was a claim that withstood the closest of scrutiny. You’ve only got to spend the briefest of periods with a W123 for example, and you’ll soon see why Mercedes charged a hefty premium over more mainstream rivals.

A Mercedes from the days when it was ruled by engineers rather than beancounters is something to savour, but with the W123 now getting on, many are getting tatty, with repair costs potentially prohibitively high. But buy a good one and look after it, and you’ll never need to replace it because a cherished W123 will rack up inter-galactic mileages without murmur.

Your AutoClassics Mercedes-Benz W123 inspection checklist

Engine
With 12 different in-line engines throughout its lifetime, including petrol and diesel units, with four, five or six cylinders, there’s plenty of choice, as you can see in the table below.

The oil should have been changed every 4000 miles, and the timing chain every 60,000 miles; failure to do so means the chain can fail, wrecking the engine. A decent engine rebuild is expensive and decent used engines are scarce.

The plastic and aluminium radiators fur up; you may get away with just flushing it through but if a new one is required, aftermarket items are costly and genuine Behr units are even more expensive. What any previous owner should have done is maintain anti-freeze levels on the 280 straight-six with its alloy cylinder head. While head gasket failures aren’t rare on petrol powerplants, this 2746cc unit is the most prone of all – and rebuilding a 280 head costs big money.

The 250’s four-choke carb is a pain to set up properly and despite a reputation for indestructability, the four-cylinder engines typically last just 150,000 miles between rebuilds; six-pot editions will do 200,000+ miles. Any W123 engine should be quiet and smoke-free; the first sign of wear is usually worn valve stem seals, leading to smoking when applying the throttle after the over-run.

Beware of aftermarket exhausts, as they don’t last as long, tend to sound tinny and they’re often a nightmare to fit. A genuine Eberspächer system costs plenty though. Also ensure that Beru or Bosch lead sets are fitted; nothing else lasts as well.

Any W123 engine is straightforward enough to rebuild on a DIY basis, but the overhead-cam 280 unit is complicated (and costly) to overhaul, while the fuel injection systems also need expert attention.

Gearbox
Most W123s came with a four-speed gearbox, manual or auto, although some facelifted (post-June 1980) cars got a five-speed manual. All these transmissions are extremely long-lived, so any whining or signs of vagueness/jumping out of gear means the car has probably been to the moon and back, and the chances are it hasn’t been serviced properly either.

The rest of the transmission is very strong, which is just as well because a rebuilt diff is big money and so is an OE clutch kit. And once again, it’s always best to stick with OE parts.

Suspension and brakes
Power assistance was optional for the recirculating-ball steering until 1982; then it became standard, although most cars had it from 1978. Make sure there’s no play because if all the adjustment has been taken up, a costly new box will be required.

Any car on its original rubber bushes will need a fresh set, while rot is common in the bottom spring mounts for the rear trailing arms. Repairs mean removing much of the rear suspension, complete with the hubs. To remove the hubs you’ll need a special tool to remove the rear wheelbearings, so it’s a job for specialists only. Estates came with self-levelling suspension at the rear; if this fails it’s very expensive to put right.

All W123s feature servo-assisted discs all round. It’s a straightforward system that shouldn’t give problems, although calipers can seize, leading to a soft pedal and a lack of reassurance when slowing. Master cylinders can also fail but replacements aren’t expensive.
Bodywork
The W123 was fairly well protected from the elements, while the paintwork was unsurpassed. But pre-1981 cars can rust badly and even later W123s are likely to have some corrosion. Panel availability is good, although some pattern stuff is ropey so it’s best to stick with genuine parts, which cost far more.

The areas most likely to give problems include the battery tray, spare wheel well and jacking points. In the case of the former, if left to corrode it’ll take the bulkhead with it. Also check behind the headlights, around the front suspension mounts, the inner front wings and in the rear wheelarches. On estates the tailgates rot and so do the fuel tanks; replacements are unavailable.

Bumpers corrode badly, from the inside out, while cars with a factory-fitted sliding sunroof (which is most of them) need particular scrutiny as the roofs can leak and the drain tubes rust, allowing water to be chanelled straight into the footwells. Repairs are involved and costly.

Interior
There were five different trim finishes; MB Tex (a tough leather-look vinyl), velour, leather, half-cloth (mixed with vinyl) or full cloth, while on coupés there were standard or lowered seats. With each finish offered in a variety of colours, tracking down matching replacement used trim is virtually impossible. Interiors get damp because of failed windscreen seals and the complex front seats can collapse, especially the driver’s.

While many W123s didn’t feature a lot of kit, what is fitted tends to be reliable. Many cars have electric windows and a few have air-con, while most feature central locking. This latter system is vacuum-operated and it’s leak-prone. On coupés it also locks the front seats in place; an automatic MoT failure beckons if the system packs in. Tracking down faults can be time-consuming, although parts costs tend to be low.

History
1976: W123 saloon debuts in 200D, 220D, 240D and 300D diesel forms, or there are 200, 230, 250, 280 and 280E petrol editions.
1977: A coupé arrives in 230C, 280C, 280CE and 300CD forms.
1978: An estate appears, in 230T, 250T, 280TE and 240TD guises. Crayford reveals a convertible W123 coupé. 12 are made.
1979: The 220D dies and the eight-seater 250, 240D and 300D go on sale.
1980: A facelift brings a new (M102) engine, better rustproofing, wheelarch liners and an ABS option. The 230C, 280C and 230T die; the 200T and 300TD debut.
1981: The turbocharged 300CD is introduced for the US.
1982: There’s now a five-speed manual option, PAS becomes standard, new all-cloth seats improve rear leg room and the 250T is dropped.
1985: The W124 replaces the W123.
AutoClassics say…
Few classics are as superbly engineered as the W123, and there are some magnificent examples out there – but many cars have been run into the ground. The cost of genuine parts has risen sharply in recent years, and buying pattern items tends to be a false economy while used components are also scarce. Serious structural faults are becoming common, while major items that never used to fail, are now beginning to need urgent attention – things like diffs, engines, gearboxes, and driveshafts.

Most sought after of all W123s is the coupé, which represents less then 5% of production. When new it was much more costly than the saloon, and classic values now reflect this – and so do restoration costs. The key is to buy on condition rather than specification as rebuilds are very expensive.

If you take the plunge go for a post-1980 facelifted car as these featured more efficient engines and better rustproofing. With taller gear ratios, cruising is more relaxed and economy is better too. Collectors want 280s, diesels and 200s are generally shunned while the 230 and 230E provides a good usable classic that’s reasonably perky but not too thirsty.

Mercedes-Benz introduced the W123 four-door executive car in January, 1976 to replace the W115.

The overall dimensions and wheelbase were lengthened and styling was updated to a less angular more contemporary look. The new look included round head lights with inboard fog lamps in all models except the 280 and 280E which had large rectangular headlights. Later the European models were all changed to the rectangular headlights. North American models retained the round complement.

The W115 engines were carried over to the new models, with the 3 liter 5-cylinder diesel model being renamed from “240D 3.0” to “300D”  in the European markets to match North American markets ( in the North American markets the 240 designated the 2.4L 4 cylinder version).

The 250 models were given a new 2525 cc inline-six (Type M123, a short-stroke version of the 2.8 liter six Type M110) this replaced the 2496 cc Type M114 six.

In the spring of 1976, a coupe version of the W123 was introduced on a shorter wheelbase than the saloon (2,710 mm (106.7 in) versus 2,795 mm (110.0 in)). This W123C/CE was available as a 230C (later 230CE) and as a 280C/CE in most markets; in North America there was also a 300CD version.

The new models proved to be the most popular series to date. Demand for the W123 was so great, back orders and waiting lists of over a year were common and used cars sold at a premium over the new car list price.

A long wheel base chassis (3,425 mm (134.8 in)) was introduced in August, 1977. The long chassis versions were available as 7/8 seat saloons through the factory and as a bare chassis with front body clip for ambulances, hearse bodies etc. Outside manufactures such as Binz or Miesen produced a variety of models on these long chassis. The long (Lang) versions could be ordered as 240D, 300D and 250 models.

The W123T estate (wagon) was introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September, 1977.  Production of the T models (Transport and Touring) began in March, 1978 in the Bremen factory in Germany.
In early 1979, the diesel models power output was increased from 55 PS (40 kW; 54 hp) to 60 PS (44 kW; 59 hp) in the 200D, from 65 PS (48 kW; 64 hp) to 72 PS (53 kW; 71 hp) in the 240D and from 80 PS (59 kW; 79 hp) to 88 PS (65 kW; 87 hp) in the 300D.

Production of the 220D ended in early 1979.

The turbo charged 5 cylinder engine was introduced in September 1979 in the 300TD Turbo diesel wagon. The turbocharged 5-cylinder 3 liter diesel engine (Type OM617) was offered with automatic transmission only and limited to the 300TD in most markets. The North American markets were given Turbo models in the 4-door and coupe models as well, possibly as a response to the competition from higher powered American cars.

In June of 1980 a new 2 liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine (Type M102) was introduced to replace the M115. A fuel-injected 2.3 liter version was introduced to replace the carbureted engine in the 230E/TE/CE models. In 1980/81 the carbureted 280 was replaced with the fuel-injected 280E.

In September 1982 the rectangular headlights from the 280/280E and power steering were standardized across all European models. In February all European models except the 300TD were offered with an optional 5-speed manual transmission.

Production or the W123 ended in January 1986.

W123 introduced many innovations in both safety and styling including ABS brakes (optional from August, 1980), retractable steering columns and airbags for the driver (optional from 1982).

Options: MB-Tex (Mercedes-Benz Texturized Punctured Vinyl) upholstery or velour (European market only) or leather upholstery, interior wood trim, passenger side exterior mirror (standard on T models), 5-speed manual transmission (European market only), 4-speed automatic transmission (standard in turbo diesel models), power windows with rear-seat switch cut-outs, vacuum powered central door locking, rear-facing extra seats (station wagon only), Standheizung (prestart timer controlled engine heating), self locking differential, sun roof, air conditioning, climate control, “Alpine” horn (selectable quieter horn), headlamp wipers (European market only), Tempomat (cruise control), power steering (standard after 1982/08), seat heating, catalytic converter (available from 1984 for California only, from fall (autumn) 1984 also in Germany for the 230E of which one thousand were built).
Power (vacuum servo) assisted disc brakes were standard on all W123s.

123:an ersatte W114/115 som Mercedes-Benz volymmodell.

I Europa såldes denna bara i kombi-karossen. Därutöver justerades effekterna uppåt på övriga motorer. Mellandieseln 220 D slopades i samma veva.

Sedan-karossen introducerades i januari 1976.

Coupén byggdes i 99 884 exemplar.

Kombin byggdes i 199 517 exemplar.

Mercedes Benz 230 CE, 1985
